What is a birth Nakshatra?

Your birth Nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. In Sanskrit it is Janma Nakshatram (जन्म नक्षत्रम्) — the same form carried into Telugu and Malayalam as janma nakshatram or jenma nakshatram, and into Tamil as janma natchathiram. North Indian usage drops the final consonant, giving the janam nakshatra most Hindi speakers say. In English it is simply your birth star.

Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 Nakshatras of 13°20′ each, a finer grid than the 12 rashis of 30°. Each Nakshatra is further split into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′, and each has a ruling planet — the lord that governs it. Since the Moon crosses one Nakshatra in roughly a day, your birth star is far more specific to you than your Moon sign alone.

Why it matters

• Naming a baby — the traditional first syllable of a child’s name is chosen from the birth Nakshatra and pada.
• Vimshottari Dasha — your entire sequence of planetary periods is calculated from the Moon’s Nakshatra position at birth, which is why the same Moon sign can produce very different life timelines.
• Marriage matching — Ashtakoota (Guna Milan) compares the Nakshatras of both people, not just their rashis.
• Muhurta — choosing auspicious timing for travel, ceremonies and new beginnings works from the Nakshatra of the day against your own.
• Birthday observance — in South Indian practice the traditional birthday is the annual return of your birth star, not the calendar date.

Because the Moon changes Nakshatra roughly every 24 hours and pada every 6, an accurate birth time matters most if you were born near a boundary — the pada in particular can shift within hours.
