“Is my Sadhe Sati running?” — how the answer is decided

Sadhe Sati is running when transiting Saturn occupies the 12th, 1st, or 2nd sign counted from your natal Moon sign — not from your Sun sign and not from your Ascendant. Saturn takes about 2.5 years per sign, so covering those three signs takes roughly 7.5 years, which is what sadhe sati literally means (“seven and a half”).

This is why two people born days apart can get opposite answers: it depends entirely on which sign the Moon occupied at birth. Sade Sati, Elinati Shani, Ezharai Sani — all the same period

The same 7.5-year transit carries different names by region, which is why searches for it look so different:

• Sadhe Sati / Sade Sati / Shani Sade Sati — the Hindi-belt names; sadhe sati = “seven and a half”.
• Elinati Shani / Elinati Sani (ఏలినాటి శని) — the Telugu name.
• Ezharai Sani / Elarai Sani (ஏழரை சனி) — the Tamil name; ezharai also means “seven and a half”.
• Shanichari — an older colloquial name still used in parts of North India.

There is no separate calculation for any of these. If a family astrologer told you your “Elinati Shani” or “Ezharai Sani” has started, the check above is the one that confirms it.

The three phases — and why the middle one gets the reputation

The 7.5 years split into three ~2.5-year phases, each named for where Saturn sits relative to your natal Moon:

• Rising (first phase) — Saturn in the 12th from Moon. Classically associated with expenditure, disrupted sleep, and matters becoming unsettled before they surface.
• Peak (second phase) — Saturn transiting over your natal Moon itself. This is the phase most of the folklore is about, traditionally linked to mental pressure and the heaviest weight of the cycle.
• Setting (third phase) — Saturn in the 2nd from Moon. Classically read as the resolving phase, touching family and finances as the cycle winds down.

Knowing which phase you are in matters more than the bare yes/no, because the traditional readings for the three differ substantially. The tool above identifies your current phase and shows the full timeline.

Dhaiya and Ashtama Shani — not the same as Sadhe Sati

These get confused with Sadhe Sati constantly, but they are a separate, shorter transit. Dhaiya (“two and a half”, also called Small Panoti) is a single 2.5-year Saturn transit that occurs in two positions relative to your natal Moon:

• Saturn in the 4th from your Moon — classically read as friction touching home, property, family, and peace of mind.
• Ashtama Shani — Saturn in the 8th from your Moon. Traditionally considered the heavier of the two Dhaiya positions, associated with sudden change, health matters, joint finances, and hidden affairs.

Dhaiya runs 2.5 years, not 7.5, and happens at different points in the cycle than Sadhe Sati. You can be in Dhaiya without being in Sadhe Sati at all. The tool above flags Dhaiya separately so the two do not get conflated.

When will my Sadhe Sati end?

Because Saturn takes ~2.5 years per sign, a full Sadhe Sati runs about 7.5 years from the moment Saturn enters the 12th from your Moon to the moment it leaves the 2nd. The exact end date depends on your Moon sign and on Saturn’s retrograde loops, which can push it back and forth across a sign boundary more than once and stretch the practical duration. The tool computes the approximate start and end for your specific Moon sign rather than quoting a generic 7.5 years.

Sadhe Sati recurs roughly every 30 years, since that is Saturn’s full orbital period. Most people go through it two or three times in a lifetime.

Do I need my exact birth time?

It helps but matters less here than for house-based checks. Sadhe Sati is read from your Moon sign, and the Moon stays in one sign for about 2.25 days — so unless you were born close to a Moon sign change, a birth time off by a few hours will not alter the result. If your birth falls near a boundary, an accurate time becomes decisive, and the tool will show the Moon’s exact degree so you can judge how close you are.

When was my last Sadhe Sati, and when is the next one?

Most Sadhe Sati calculators answer only one question — is it running today. The tool above also shows your previous and next cycles with dates, so you can look backwards as well as forwards.

This matters because Sadhe Sati is not a one-off event. Saturn takes roughly 29.5 years to travel the zodiac, so the same 7.5-year period returns about every 30 years. Most people live through two or three, and occasionally a fourth: typically one in childhood or early adulthood, one in middle age, and one in later life. Each visits the same three signs relative to your Moon, but lands on a completely different stage of your life.

For each cycle the tool breaks out all three phases — Rising (Saturn in the 12th from your Moon), Peak (over your Moon) and Setting (the 2nd from your Moon) — with the sign and date range for each. If a cycle is finished it is marked as completed; if it is still ahead, a countdown shows how long until it begins.

Looking at a past cycle against what actually happened in those years is often the most useful thing on this page. It gives you a concrete reference point rather than an abstract warning, and it tends to be a more honest guide to how the next one will feel than any generic description of Saturn.

One thing you may notice in the dates: phase ranges can overlap by several months. That is not an error — Saturn turns retrograde each year and can move back across a sign boundary it has already crossed, so it briefly re-enters the previous phase before settling into the next.
