What is Ketu Gochar (Ketu transit) in Vedic astrology?

Ketu Gochar is the real-time movement of Ketu through the 12 zodiac signs (Rashis) and 27 Nakshatras. Ketu completes one full circuit of the zodiac in about 18.6 years, moving at a steady pace — roughly 18 months per sign, and longer when a retrograde cycle falls in that sign. Ketu owns the Ashwini, Magha and Moola Nakshatras, is exalted in Scorpio (peak 20 degrees) and debilitated in Taurus (peak 20 degrees). It signifies detachment, spiritual insight, past-life mastery, isolation and moksha.

What is the difference between Ketu and Rahu?

They are the two ends of one axis, always exactly 180 degrees apart. Ketu is the south node — associated with detachment, past mastery and what a person disengages from. Rahu is the north node — worldly appetite, ambition and whatever a person is drawn towards. Neither is a physical body; both are the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic.

What is Ketu Peyarchi?

Ketu Peyarchi is the Tamil / South Indian term for Ketu's sign change — literally “Ketu transit.” Because Ketu retrogrades roughly about once a year and can cross back into the previous sign, a single calendar year usually contains 12 to 15 sign-visit events rather than a clean 12. How often does Ketu go retrograde?

Classical practice treats Ketu and Rahu as always retrograde. The nodes are the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, and those points drift backwards continuously at roughly 0.05 degrees per day. The mean node does so without exception; the true node used here wobbles around it and drifts forward on roughly a quarter of days, but never long enough to station or to form a window worth listing.

What does the Rahu–Ketu axis shift mean?

Roughly every 18 months the nodes move into a new sign pair, and because they are locked 180 degrees apart both ends change at the same instant. Classical Vedic astrology treats this as a redirection of the karmic axis: the house Ketu enters becomes one of release and detachment, while the opposite house held by Rahu becomes an area of pursuit and appetite.

Can Ketu or Rahu be combust?

No. Combustion is the Sun overwhelming a physical planet's visibility, and the nodes are shadow points with no body to obscure. The classical combustion orbs that apply to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn do not apply to Ketu or Rahu at all.

Why do node positions differ slightly from some other Vedic sites?

Two reasons. First, this site uses the TRUE node rather than the mean node — the true node accounts for the Moon's perturbations and can differ from the mean node by up to about 1.5 degrees. Second, ayanamsha choice shifts every sidereal longitude; we use Lahiri throughout.

Where is Ketu exalted and debilitated?

Ketu is exalted in Scorpio, with peak exaltation at 20 degrees, and debilitated in Taurus, with peak debilitation at 20 degrees. Neither node rules a sign in the classical scheme, so ordinary own-sign and mooltrikona dignities do not apply to Ketu — only exaltation and debilitation are read.

What is Ketu Gochar?

Ketu Gochar (केतु गोचर) is the transit of Ketu, the descending (south) lunar node — one of the two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic. It is not a physical body. Classical Vedic texts call it a Chhaya Graha (shadow planet), and pair it with Rahu, the ascending node, as a single karmic axis rather than as two independent planets.

Ketu is always exactly 180° opposite Rahu: when Ketu enters Aquarius, Rahu enters Leo at the same instant. This page focuses on Ketu, with Rahu's mirror position shown alongside it for context. The axis is also known as Rahu Ketu Peyarchi (Tamil), Rahu Ketu Sanchar, or simply the nodal axis.

Why the nodes are treated as always retrograde

Classical practice treats the nodes as permanently Vakri. The crossing points drift backwards through the zodiac at roughly 0.05° per day, completing a full circuit in about 18.6 years. The mean node never deviates from that at all. The true node — which these pages use — wobbles around the mean and does drift forward for a few days at a time, roughly a quarter of all days, but never long enough to form a station or a window worth listing. That is why these pages carry no retrograde badges: there is nothing listable to flag, not because the motion is literally uniform.

The Rahu–Ketu axis shift

Because the nodes are shadow points Ketu is also never combust — there is no body for the Sun's rays to overwhelm, so the classical combustion orbs that apply to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn simply do not apply here.

The event that does matter is the axis shift: roughly every 18 months Ketu moves into a new sign, and because it is locked in opposition to Rahu both ends change together. A shift from Aquarius–Leo to Capricorn–Cancer relocates the whole karmic axis of a chart in one move. These shifts are the most-watched nodal events in Vedic astrology, and the year timeline lists every one with its exact time.

What Ketu signifies

Ketu, the south node, is associated with detachment, past mastery, spiritual insight, and the areas a person disengages from or takes for granted. Rahu, the north node, is its opposite: worldly appetite, ambition, obsession, foreign things and places, and whatever a person is drawn towards but has not yet mastered.

Because the two sit six signs apart, they are judged together. Whatever house Ketu occupies is where something is being released or already known; the opposite house, held by Rahu, is the area of hunger and pursuit.

Exaltation and debilitation

Neither node rules a sign, so the ordinary own sign and mooltrikona dignities do not apply — only exaltation and debilitation are read:

Ketu exalted across all of Scorpio (peak at 20°), debilitated across all of Taurus.
Rahu exalted across all of Taurus (peak at 20°), debilitated across all of Scorpio.

The two are always mirrored: strengthening one end of the axis necessarily weakens the other. Note that classical sources differ here — some texts place Ketu's exaltation at 3° Sagittarius and Rahu's at 3° Gemini. This site follows the Scorpio/Taurus convention used throughout its chart calculations, so the transit pages and the birth charts always agree.

How these calculations are done

Every position, sign entry and nakshatra boundary is computed from the Swiss Ephemeris DE431 dataset using the true node (not the mean node), with Lahiri Ayanamsha applied for sidereal longitudes. Boundary times are resolved to the second by binary search on the ephemeris output rather than estimated from average motion. Ketu is derived as Rahu + 180° at every instant, which is how the birth charts compute it too — so the two ends of the axis can never drift out of opposition.
