What is Mangal Gochar?

Mangal Gochar (मंगल गोचर) is the real-time journey of Mars — the planet of energy, courage, drive, property and land, siblings, competition, surgery, and disciplined physical effort — through the 12 zodiac signs and 27 Nakshatras. In Vedic astrology, Mars (Mangal) rules two signs — Aries and Scorpio — and is exalted across all of Capricorn (peak at 28°), where discipline gives its raw energy structure. Mars is debilitated across all of Cancer (peak at 28°). Aries additionally holds Mars's mooltrikona at 0–12°. As an outer planet Mars can stand anywhere from conjunction to opposition relative to the Sun, and it moves at a steady pace — roughly 38–45 days per sign when direct — but during a retrograde cycle it can dwell far longer in one sign region, moving forward, back into the previous sign, then forward again. Mars is Bhratru Karaka, the significator of siblings, and Parakrama Karaka, the significator of valour and decisive action.

Mangal Rashi Peyarchi — the year timeline

Mangal Peyarchi is the Tamil / South Indian term for Mars's sign change — literally "Mars transit." Because Mars retrogrades roughly once every 26 months and can cross back into the previous sign, a single calendar year usually contains 14–16 sign-visit events rather than a clean 12. The Year Timeline shows the complete Peyarchi calendar for any year: every sign visit as a parent card, with nested sub-events for retrograde windows, combust windows, and peak exaltation / debilitation moments. Vedic practice uses this to time Mars-signified matters — buying property, starting construction, surgery, athletic competition, and any venture needing courage — favouring direct, uncombust Mars and avoiding retrograde or combust windows for anything that depends on decisive action.

Mars Retrograde (Mangal Vakri)

Mars goes retrograde roughly once every 26 months, for about 60 to 80 days each time — far less often than Mercury or Venus, but for a much longer stretch when it happens. During retrograde motion Mars's sidereal speed becomes negative: the planet appears to move backwards through the zodiac, sometimes crossing a sign boundary backwards and re-entering the previous sign. Vedic tradition treats Mangal Vakri as less favourable for launching disputes or litigation, starting surgery or construction, buying property, and beginning anything that hinges on decisive force — and more favourable for review, regrouping, finishing work already started, and revisiting stalled conflicts. Mars Combust (Mangal Asta)

Mars is combust when it comes within 17° of the Sun, in both directions (the threshold given in the Surya Siddhanta). During combustion Mars is considered weakened — overshadowed by the Sun's rays and invisible in the sky — and traditionally unfavourable for Mars-signified matters such as disputes, litigation, surgery, property purchases and any undertaking needing decisive force. Because Mars is an outer planet it can stand anywhere from conjunction to opposition, so combustion is comparatively rare: roughly one window every two years, around solar conjunction. Mars Exaltation & Debilitation

• Exalted across all of Capricorn (Makara) — Saturn's disciplined earth sign gives Mars's raw energy structure and staying power, which classical texts treat as its finest expression. Sign-wide exaltation applies for the whole visit; Peak Exaltation falls at exactly 28° Capricorn. The strongest placement for property, construction, engineering, surgery and sustained physical effort.
• Own Sign in Aries (Mesha) — Mars in its natural fire-sign home, and the seat of its mooltrikona at 0°00'00"–12°00'00", with plain own sign from 12°00'01". Strong influence on initiative, competition, athletics and bold beginnings.
• Own Sign across all of Scorpio (Vrishchika) — Mars's water-sign home, where its drive turns inward and sustained. Strong influence on research, investigation, surgery and anything demanding sustained intensity.
• Debilitated across all of Cancer (Karka) — Mars is at its weakest here, its direct drive turned reactive and defensive by Cancer's emotional water. Sign-wide debilitation applies for the whole visit; Peak Debilitation is at 28° Cancer. Traditionally a period for caution with property purchase, litigation, elective surgery and confrontation.

Bhratru Karaka — Mars, courage and conflict

In classical Vedic astrology Mars is the Bhratru Karaka, significator of siblings, and the Parakrama Karaka, significator of valour, initiative and decisive action. Mars is a natural malefic — a krura graha whose heat and force can either cut through obstacles or provoke conflict, depending on the sign, dignity and aspects it carries. This makes its transit conditions matter as much as its raw position.

For timing Mars-signified activity — property and land dealings, construction, surgery, athletic and competitive ventures, disputes and litigation, machinery and engineering work — standard practice prefers Mars direct, uncombust, and in Capricorn, Aries or Scorpio. Retrograde, combust, or Cancer-debilitated Mars is traditionally avoided for anything requiring decisive force or sustained physical effort. Because Mars is combust only about once every two years, clean windows are plentiful — the Year Timeline shows exactly where they fall.

How the calculations are done

Every Mars position, sign entry, retrograde station, combust boundary, and peak-dignity moment is computed via Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsha — the same DE431 planetary dataset published by NASA JPL and used across professional-grade Vedic tools. Each event (a sign change, a retrograde station, a combust boundary, a peak-exaltation entry) is resolved to the exact ephemeris instant rather than approximated. Retrograde start / end times are found by tracking when Mars's speed reverses; combust boundaries by tracking Mars's angular distance to the Sun against the classical 17° threshold; sign, nakshatra, and peak-dignity boundaries by tracking Mars's sidereal longitude. No analytical formulas or interpolation tables are used — every event matches what a professional-grade Vedic tool would give you for the same instant.

Sidereal vs Tropical Mars — and why it matters

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The two have drifted apart by about 24° in the current era due to precession of the equinoxes. Consequence: what a Western app calls "Mars in Gemini" is often sidereal "Mars in Aries" in the Vedic reading. This tracker uses Lahiri Ayanamsha throughout — the standard adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee (1955), and the reference frame that produces the Mars transit dates you'll see in Vedic panchang, Muhurta software, and traditional almanac publications.

Does Mars's position depend on my location?

The sidereal Mars longitude at any UTC moment does not vary by geography. What varies is your local wall-clock time: a Mars sign entry might read "3:47 AM IST" for someone in Delhi and "5:17 PM PST the previous day" for someone in California — same astronomical event, different clock label.
