What is Shani Gochar?

Shani Gochar (शनि गोचर) is the real-time journey of Saturn — the planet of discipline, karma, longevity, endurance, hard work and service, delay and restriction, old age, and detachment — through the 12 zodiac signs and 27 Nakshatras. In Vedic astrology, Saturn (Shani) rules two signs — Aquarius and Capricorn — and is exalted across all of Libra (peak at 20°), where Venus's sense of balance gives its discipline a fair measure. Saturn is debilitated across all of Aries (peak at 20°). Aquarius additionally holds Saturn's mooltrikona at 0–20°. As an outer planet Saturn can stand anywhere from conjunction to opposition relative to the Sun, and it moves at a steady pace — roughly ~2.5 years per sign when direct — but during a retrograde cycle it can dwell far longer in one sign region, moving forward, back into the previous sign, then forward again. Saturn is Ayu Karaka, the significator of longevity, and Dukha Karaka, the significator of sorrow and hardship — the slowest and most demanding of the classical seven.

Shani Rashi Peyarchi — the year timeline

Shani Peyarchi is the Tamil / South Indian term for Saturn's sign change — literally "Saturn transit." Because Saturn retrogrades about once a year and can cross back into the previous sign, a single calendar year usually contains only one to three sign-visit cards — Saturn needs about 2.5 years to cross a single sign. Vedic practice uses this to time Saturn-signified matters — long-term commitments, property tenure and leases, career and service undertakings, and disciplined work meant to endure — favouring direct, uncombust Saturn and avoiding retrograde or combust windows for anything expected to last.

Saturn Retrograde (Shani Vakri)

Saturn goes retrograde roughly once a year, for about 138 days each time — far less often than Mercury or Venus, but for a much longer stretch when it happens. During retrograde motion Saturn's sidereal speed becomes negative: the planet appears to move backwards through the zodiac, sometimes crossing a sign boundary backwards and re-entering the previous sign. Vedic tradition treats Shani Vakri as less favourable for entering long-term commitments, signing tenures and leases, and beginning work meant to endure — and more favourable for review, consolidation, finishing what is already under way, and settling long-standing obligations. Saturn Combust (Shani Asta)

Saturn is combust when it comes within 15° of the Sun, in both directions (the threshold given in the Surya Siddhanta). During combustion Saturn is considered weakened — overshadowed by the Sun's rays and invisible in the sky — and traditionally unfavourable for Saturn-signified matters such as long-term commitments, tenures, and service or career undertakings. Saturn meets the Sun once per ~12.5-month synodic cycle, so combustion falls in roughly one window a year, around solar conjunction. Saturn Exaltation & Debilitation

• exalted across all of Libra (Tula) — Venus's balanced air sign, where Saturn's demand for fairness and structure finds its clearest expression, which classical texts treat as its finest expression. Sign-wide exaltation applies for the whole visit; Peak Exaltation falls at exactly 20° Libra. The strongest placement for contracts, long-term commitments, service, and work meant to endure.
• Own Sign in Aquarius (Kumbha) — Saturn in its natural air-sign home, and the seat of its mooltrikona at 0°00'00"–20°00'00", with plain own sign from 20°00'01". Strong influence on collective work, systems, detachment and long-range thinking.
• Own Sign across all of Capricorn (Makara) — Saturn's earth-sign home, where its influence runs steady and sustained. Strong influence on career, structure, duty and sustained ambition.
• debilitated across all of Aries (Mesha) — Saturn is at its weakest here, Mars's impatient fire sign, which rushes the slow, deliberate work Saturn depends on. Sign-wide debilitation applies for the whole visit; Peak Debilitation is at 20° Aries. Traditionally a period for caution with long-term commitments, tenures, and anything requiring patience to mature.

Ayu Karaka — Saturn, time and endurance

In classical Vedic astrology Saturn is the Ayu Karaka, significator of longevity, and the Dukha Karaka, significator of sorrow and hardship. Saturn is a natural malefic — a krura graha whose cold, slow pressure either matures a matter or grinds it down, depending on the sign, dignity and aspects it carries. This makes its transit conditions matter as much as its raw position.

For timing Saturn-signified activity — long-term commitments, property tenure and leases, career and service undertakings, and disciplined work meant to endure — standard practice prefers Saturn direct, uncombust, and in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius. Retrograde, combust, or Aries-debilitated Saturn is traditionally avoided for anything expected to last. Because Saturn is combust only about once a year, clean windows are plentiful — the Year Timeline shows exactly where they fall.

How the calculations are done

Every Saturn position, sign entry, retrograde station, combust boundary, and peak-dignity moment is computed via Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsha — the same DE431 planetary dataset published by NASA JPL and used across professional-grade Vedic tools. Each event (a sign change, a retrograde station, a combust boundary, a peak-exaltation entry) is resolved to the exact ephemeris instant rather than approximated. Retrograde start / end times are found by tracking when Saturn's speed reverses; combust boundaries by tracking Saturn's angular distance to the Sun against the classical 15° threshold; sign, nakshatra, and peak-dignity boundaries by tracking Saturn's sidereal longitude. No analytical formulas or interpolation tables are used — every event matches what a professional-grade Vedic tool would give you for the same instant.

Sidereal vs Tropical Saturn — and why it matters

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The two have drifted apart by about 24° in the current era due to precession of the equinoxes. Consequence: what a Western app calls "Saturn in Gemini" is often sidereal "Saturn in Aries" in the Vedic reading. This tracker uses Lahiri Ayanamsha throughout — the standard adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee (1955), and the reference frame that produces the Saturn transit dates you'll see in Vedic panchang, Muhurta software, and traditional almanac publications.

Does Saturn's position depend on my location?

The sidereal Saturn longitude at any UTC moment does not vary by geography. What varies is your local wall-clock time: a Saturn sign entry might read "3:47 AM IST" for someone in Delhi and "5:17 PM PST the previous day" for someone in California — same astronomical event, different clock label.
