What Gandanta is

Gandanta means “the knot at the end”. It is the seam where a water sign finishes and a fire sign begins — the point at which one cycle dissolves before the next has found its footing. There are three such seams in the zodiac, and each spans 3°20′ on either side:

• Pisces → Aries — 26°40′ Pisces to 3°20′ Aries. The zodiac’s own end and restart, so classically the most profound of the three.
• Cancer → Leo — 26°40′ Cancer to 3°20′ Leo. Emotion giving way to identity.
• Scorpio → Sagittarius — 26°40′ Scorpio to 3°20′ Sagittarius. Transformation giving way to dharma.

The water side reads as dissolution and letting go; the fire side as being launched before you are ready. Together the three junctions cover 20° of the zodiac, so roughly 5.6% of births have the Moon in Gandanta.

How Gandanta differs from Ganda Moola

The two are related but defined on different axes, which is why they are so often confused. Ganda Moola is defined by nakshatra lordship — the six Nakshatras ruled by Ketu and Mercury, covering 80° of the zodiac. Gandanta is defined by degree — 20° in total.

Because 3°20′ is exactly one pada, Gandanta works out to precisely pada 4 of Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha and pada 1 of Ashwini, Magha and Moola. Every Gandanta degree therefore sits inside a Ganda Mool Nakshatra: Gandanta is a strict subset, exactly one quarter of Ganda Moola territory. That is also why the padas traditionally named the most severe within Ganda Moola are precisely the Gandanta padas — two doctrines pointing at the same 20°.

Reading the result

• Tight orb (within 0°48′ of the junction) — the placement classical Muhurta treats most seriously. Shown in red.
• Full pada (out to 3°20′) — still Gandanta by the pada definition, but progressively milder the further from the seam. Shown in orange.
• Moon and Lagna carry the most weight. A Gandanta Moon is the classical reading; a Gandanta ascendant is judged on the same orb here rather than a narrower one.
• Distance from junction is given in degrees so you can judge severity yourself rather than relying on a label.
