Mars Date Lookup

Where will Mars be on a given date? Get its complete Vedic readout at local sunrise for any past or future day — including retrograde and combust status. Great for verifying natal Mars placement or checking a property or surgery Muhurta.

Note: All calculations use Lahiri Ayanamsa (sidereal) and Swiss Ephemeris for high precision. Times are displayed in your local timezone. Mars stays in each sign for ~38–45 days when direct, up to ~130 days total when a retrograde loop happens in one sign region. Mars goes retrograde roughly once every 26 months for ~60–80 days each, and is combust within 17° of the Sun (in both directions).

About Mars Date Lookup (Historical Mangal Gochar)

Mars at any date — how it works

Pick any past or future date; the tool computes Mars's sidereal position at local sunrise for that day, plus all Mars events happening during the 24-hour window — sign changes, nakshatra changes, and pada boundaries. Sunrise is used as the reference moment because Vedic day boundaries begin at sunrise, not midnight. The readout matches what a Vedic panchang for that date would report.

Why check Mars on a specific date?

  • Natal Mars verification — look up your birth date to confirm which Rashi and Nakshatra Mars occupied when you were born. This is the natal Mars that natal charts read from.
  • Property & competition Muhurta planning — check whether Mars is direct, uncombust, and in a favorable sign for a proposed start date. Vedic tradition strongly prefers property, construction and competitive start dates with Mars in Capricorn (exalted), Aries or Scorpio (own), and avoids retrograde or combust days.
  • Historical events — verify Mars's position on any date in recorded history — birthdays of ancestors, historical incidents, past astrological readings. Swiss Ephemeris DE431 covers 13,201 BCE to 17,191 CE.
  • Transit over natal (Gochara) — compare the Mars of your birth date to today's Mars transit to see current activation of energy karma.

Sunrise-based reference — matters for boundary days

When Mars changes sign at, say, 2:47 PM on a Tuesday, the sunrise-based readout will show the previous sign for Tuesday and the new sign for Wednesday's sunrise. This is the classical Vedic convention. The tool also lists any Mars sign or nakshatra changes happening within the 24-hour window from the selected day's sunrise, so you never miss a boundary-day transition. If you need the intra-day position at a specific hour rather than at sunrise, use the Live Tracker when the date happens to be today.

Common questions this page answers

This page answers one shape of question: you already know the date, and you want to know where Mars was or will be on it. Typical phrasings:

  • Where will Mars be on a future date? — set the date picker to any upcoming day (a proposed property registration, a surgery date) and get Mars’s rashi, nakshatra, pada, and motion state at that day’s local sunrise.
  • Where was Mars on a past date? — check any historical day. Swiss Ephemeris DE431 covers 13,201 BCE onward, so ancestral dates and past events all resolve.
  • Which nakshatra was Mars in when I was born? — enter your birth date to read the natal Mangal nakshatra and pada used in Vedic chart reading and relationship analysis.
  • Was Mars retrograde on that date? — the readout carries a Direct / Retrograde (Vakri) flag. Classical Muhurta avoids Mars-retrograde days for property deals and elective surgery, so this is the first check for any candidate date.
  • Was Mars combust (Mangal Asta) on that date? — the readout shows the combust flag plus the exact angular distance to the Sun, against the classical 17° threshold.
  • Is this date good for property, surgery or competition by Mars criteria? — check three things on the readout: Mars direct (no Rx flag), uncombust, and preferably in Capricorn (exalted) or Aries / Scorpio (own).

The reverse question — “when will Mars next be in Capricorn / Aries / Mrigashira?” — is answered by the Find Mars Transit Dates tool, which searches any 730-day range for a target you pick.

  • Find Mars Transit Dates — reverse lookup. Pick a nakshatra or rashi and get every Mars window in the next 730 days — wide enough to span a Mars retrograde and the visits around it, including retrograde re-entries as separate rows.
  • Mangal Rashi Peyarchi (Year Timeline) — also called Mangal Peyarchi. Every Mars sign visit for a chosen year as a card, with retrograde loops shown as connected multi-visit chains, combust windows, and peak-dignity moments called out.
  • Mangal Nakshatra Peyarchi (Nakshatra Year Timeline) — every Mars Nakshatra visit for a chosen year as a card, with pada-level entry / exit times. Retrograde re-entries as separate cards; Mars-owned Nakshatras (Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha) highlighted.
  • Manglik / Mangal Dosha Check — a different question from transit: Manglik status depends on where Mars sat in your birth chart, not where it is today. Use this if you want your natal Mangal Dosha verdict rather than Mars's current position.
