What is Guru Gochar?

Guru Gochar (गुरु गोचर) is the real-time journey of Jupiter — the planet of wisdom, higher learning, dharma and ethics, teachers and mentors, children, wealth and expansion, law, and generous counsel — through the 12 zodiac signs and 27 Nakshatras. In Vedic astrology, Jupiter (Guru) rules two signs — Sagittarius and Pisces — and is exalted across all of Cancer (peak at 5°), where the Moon's nurturing water lets its grace flow most freely. Jupiter is debilitated across all of Capricorn (peak at 5°). Sagittarius additionally holds Jupiter's mooltrikona at 0–10°. As an outer planet Jupiter can stand anywhere from conjunction to opposition relative to the Sun, and it moves at a steady pace — roughly ~12 months per sign when direct — but during a retrograde cycle it can dwell far longer in one sign region, moving forward, back into the previous sign, then forward again. Jupiter is Putra Karaka, the significator of children, and Dhana Karaka, the significator of wealth and prosperity — the greatest natural benefic of the classical seven.

Guru Rashi Peyarchi — the year timeline

Guru Peyarchi is the Tamil / South Indian term for Jupiter's sign change — literally "Jupiter transit." Because Jupiter retrogrades roughly once every 13 months and can cross back into the previous sign, a single calendar year usually contains only three or four sign-visit cards, since Jupiter spends about twelve months in each sign. Vedic practice uses this to time Jupiter-signified matters — weddings and thread ceremonies, beginning formal study, teaching, legal filings, charitable giving and long-term investment — favouring direct, uncombust Jupiter and avoiding retrograde or combust windows for anything meant to grow and endure.

Jupiter Retrograde (Guru Vakri)

Jupiter goes retrograde roughly once every 13 months, for about about 120 days each time — far less often than Mercury or Venus, but for a much longer stretch when it happens. During retrograde motion Jupiter's sidereal speed becomes negative: the planet appears to move backwards through the zodiac, sometimes crossing a sign boundary backwards and re-entering the previous sign. Vedic tradition treats Guru Vakri as less favourable for weddings, beginning formal study, taking vows, and committing to long-term expansion — and more favourable for revisiting philosophy, resuming interrupted study, and reconsidering commitments already made. Jupiter Combust (Guru Asta)

Jupiter is combust when it comes within 11° of the Sun, in both directions (the threshold given in the Surya Siddhanta). During combustion Jupiter is considered weakened — overshadowed by the Sun's rays and invisible in the sky — and traditionally unfavourable for Jupiter-signified matters such as weddings, ceremonies, initiations, and long-term commitments. Jupiter meets the Sun once per ~13-month synodic cycle, so combustion falls in roughly one window a year, around solar conjunction. Jupiter Exaltation & Debilitation

• exalted across all of Cancer (Karka) — the Moon's nurturing water sign, where Jupiter's expansive grace is most freely given, which classical texts treat as its finest expression. Sign-wide exaltation applies for the whole visit; Peak Exaltation falls at exactly 5° Cancer. The strongest placement for weddings, ceremonies, teaching, counsel and anything begun with an eye on the long term.
• Own Sign in Sagittarius (Dhanu) — Jupiter in its natural fire-sign home, and the seat of its mooltrikona at 0°00'00"–10°00'00", with plain own sign from 10°00'01". Strong influence on philosophy, higher study, long journeys and matters of dharma.
• Own Sign across all of Pisces (Meena) — Jupiter's water-sign home, where its influence runs steady and sustained. Strong influence on compassion, spirituality, retreat and inner counsel.
• debilitated across all of Capricorn (Makara) — Jupiter is at its weakest here, Saturn's austere earth sign, which constrains Jupiter's natural generosity into caution and calculation. Sign-wide debilitation applies for the whole visit; Peak Debilitation is at 5° Capricorn. Traditionally a period for caution with expansion, speculation, large commitments and matters of faith.

Putra and Dhana Karaka — Jupiter, wisdom and growth

In classical Vedic astrology Jupiter is the Putra Karaka, significator of children, and the Dhana Karaka, significator of wealth and prosperity. Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic — a shubha graha whose expansive grace enlarges whatever it touches, for better or worse, depending on the sign, dignity and aspects it carries. This makes its transit conditions matter as much as its raw position.

For timing Jupiter-signified activity — weddings and thread ceremonies, beginning formal study, teaching and initiation, legal filings, charitable giving and long-term investment — standard practice prefers Jupiter direct, uncombust, and in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces. Retrograde, combust, or Capricorn-debilitated Jupiter is traditionally avoided for anything meant to grow and endure. Because Jupiter is combust only about once a year, clean windows are plentiful — the Year Timeline shows exactly where they fall.

How the calculations are done

Every Jupiter position, sign entry, retrograde station, combust boundary, and peak-dignity moment is computed via Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsha — the same DE431 planetary dataset published by NASA JPL and used across professional-grade Vedic tools. Each event (a sign change, a retrograde station, a combust boundary, a peak-exaltation entry) is resolved to the exact ephemeris instant rather than approximated. Retrograde start / end times are found by tracking when Jupiter's speed reverses; combust boundaries by tracking Jupiter's angular distance to the Sun against the classical 11° threshold; sign, nakshatra, and peak-dignity boundaries by tracking Jupiter's sidereal longitude. No analytical formulas or interpolation tables are used — every event matches what a professional-grade Vedic tool would give you for the same instant.

Sidereal vs Tropical Jupiter — and why it matters

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac. The two have drifted apart by about 24° in the current era due to precession of the equinoxes. Consequence: what a Western app calls "Jupiter in Gemini" is often sidereal "Jupiter in Aries" in the Vedic reading. This tracker uses Lahiri Ayanamsha throughout — the standard adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee (1955), and the reference frame that produces the Jupiter transit dates you'll see in Vedic panchang, Muhurta software, and traditional almanac publications.

Does Jupiter's position depend on my location?

The sidereal Jupiter longitude at any UTC moment does not vary by geography. What varies is your local wall-clock time: a Jupiter sign entry might read "3:47 AM IST" for someone in Delhi and "5:17 PM PST the previous day" for someone in California — same astronomical event, different clock label.
